Shadow Mage

Later that day, as the sun was setting, Naomi drove into the parking lot of Magical Research Laboratories. MRL, a company owned by Drachenburg Industries, conducted magical experiments here in their facilities north of San Francisco. A chain-link fence surrounded the compound, a barrier that was supposed to keep MRL’s experimental beasts in and thieves out. It hadn’t proven sufficient to hold in the magic tigers.

Naomi parked between buildings one and two. The last time she’d been here, a power-hungry mage had tried to kill her and Sera. Such fond memories.

She and Alex hopped out of the car—at least what was left of it. The magic tigers had destroyed her car. It had barely made it here. On the plus side, after pouring down all day, it had finally stopped raining ten minutes ago. Naomi was counting her blessings, small as they were. At least she wasn’t sitting on soggy seats. After the tigers had gotten through with her convertible, it wasn’t very convertible anymore. They’d torn the extendible top right off.

The Disposal crew parked beside Naomi’s car and began to unload their big vans. Then they all walked together toward the building, Naomi and Alex in the lead. Behind them, the Disposal guys carried large cages between them. Each one held one of the magic tigers that had escaped from the facility this morning. Naomi and Alex had spent the whole day tracking down and capturing every single one of those vicious beasts.

The monsters hadn’t come willingly. Each of their claws was as sharp as a Japanese kitchen knife, and their saliva burned like asphalt on a scorching summer day. Naomi’s tank top and jeans were torn to pieces and splattered with mud. Sweat and rainwater pasted her sopping hair to her head.

Alex walked beside her, a spring in her step. She wasn’t just unfazed; she was invigorated. And Naomi wasn’t surprised. Alex relished a good monster fight. She also seemed to be completely immune to rain and mud.

“Thanks for the good workout.” Beaming, Alex slapped Naomi on the shoulder.

Naomi tried not to wince, but she only partially succeeded. During the battles with the tigers, she’d fallen hard more than a few times. Her skin was black and blue. And she ached deep down to her bones. They were probably bruised.

“We should do it again soon,” Alex said brightly.

“The next time I need to hunt down savage beasts, I know who to call.”

Alex winked at her, then sashayed across the parking lot to join her assassin boyfriend. He stood waiting in front of a sleek black sports car. A Maserati, of course. The car company really needed to hire the assassin as their spokesman.

Dressed all in black, Logan seemed to blend into the car. He wasn’t moving. He didn’t even look like he was breathing.

As Alex greeted him with a rough, enthusiastic kiss, Naomi pushed open the doors and led the Disposal crew into the building. Everyone in the lobby glanced up from their desks to see the procession of cages—and the path of muddy footprints the Disposal guys had tracked in.
